Before buying a puppy it is recommended you contact many breeders of American Bulldogs and visit their houses or kennels to view conditions the dogs are raised under. The first thing to pay attention to is whether the kennel is clean enough to keep newly born puppies that are susceptible to various infections. If the breeder breeds not only the American Bulldog but other dogs as well, the kennel is likely to be a crowded place. Make sure that the puppies and the dam are placed separately from adult dogs. You should never see an ill-looking dog near the litter. A responsible breeder realizes how threatening such contacts can be for little American Bulldogs.
The question of registries should also be a concern for prospective buyers. The American Bulldog is considered a rare breed. Most all-breed registries do not register American Bulldog litters. The main breed registry is the ABA (American Bulldogs Association). It does not register dogs that do not conform to the breed standard. Therefore, ABA registered American Bulldogs are considered the best choice.
There are some other organizations that register the breed. However, not all of them can afford examining the dogs and prove they are purebred American Bulldogs. Very often, such registries register American Bulldog and other Bull-type dogs' crosses, which is detrimental to the breed. Buyers also feel disappointed when their dogs registered as American Bulldogs appear to have features not characteristic of the breed. Therefore, it is wise to buy puppies from purebred parent dogs that have been bred in accordance with the official breed standard. One can contact the ABA for a list of associated breeders who produce purebred American Bulldogs.
