Bulldog Breed
The Bulldog breed is famous for its unique, somewhat formidable appearance and docile temperament. We have two Bulldog strains, both originating from the Olde English Bulldogge, a ferocious Mastiff-type butcher dog, which was used in bull-baiting contests in the old days: the English Bulldog and the American Bulldog. Today’s Bulldogs are no longer intended for any bloody sport, as long as breeders have done their utmost to breed ferocity out of them.
The English Bulldog has a heavily-muscled body, thick neck, short and powerful limbs and a very broad head with a very undershot lower mandible. He stands 11-14 inches high at the shoulder, and weighs 53-55lbs. The coat is short and smooth, and it comes in various color permutations, including red, brindle, fawn, white, brown, or any combination of these colors. The teeth are very large and strong, the jaws closing in a firm scissors bite. The eyes are round, dark and placed widely apart. The tail is short and held low. The ears are small, folded or rose-shaped. The English Bulldog is one of the most famous Bulldog breeds of today, and it is very different from the Olde English Bulldogge.
The English Bulldog of today is a sweet and kind-hearted companion. He is not intended for hard work, and requires a specific environment. Being very people-oriented, English Bulldogs rarely adventure outside their homes without the owner. They are good with children and, if well socialized, they get on well with other pets. They can be willful at times, and hence it takes a little bit of experience to bring up a Bulldog.
The American Bulldog is different from its English counterpart. American Bulldogs are more like the Olde English Bulldogge as to their appearance, as breeders strove to recreate the old dog with an emphasis on its brave and tenacious look. American Bulldogs are bred as working dogs, and unlike the English Bulldog, they are very enduring and athletic. They are excellent guardians and can be very helpful in hunting. However, they are no longer ferocious either, and can even make friends with strangers in the course of time. Like the English Bulldog, a well socialized American Bulldog is easy-going and can get along with children and other animals. Today, the Bulldog breed is very popular in various countries.
American Bulldogs are twice taller at the shoulder than English Bulldogs (20-28 inches), and they weigh 80-120lbs. They have a short and sleek coat, which comes in various colors: white, brindle, fawn, tan, red, brown and so forth. In America, the Bulldog breed is divided into two types: the Johnson (Classic/Bully type) and the Scott (Standard/Performance type).
